Lady Bulldogs defeat Paintsville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs defeated the Paintsville Lady Tigers 67-64 on Monday in the first round of the 15th Regional Women’s High School Basketball Tournament at Pike Central High School on Monday.
The Bulldogs came into Monday’s game with a record of 13-12 on the season and 10-4 in the region. The Lady Tigers came in with a record of 11-19 and 9-12 in the region. This will be the third time these two teams meet this season. The Lady Bulldogs came out on top twice the last time these teams met.
The first half saw back-and-forth battle between both teams in the first half with three tties and many lead changes. Lawrence County Senior Sophie Adkins put up 9 points and Freshman Jada Patton put up 8 in the first half. On the Lady Tigers side, standout sophomore Kylie Kinner put up 10 points.
By the half, the Bulldogs held an eight-point lead 32-24. Kylie Kinner scored 29 points in the 2nd half, hitting three straight 3-pointers in the 4th quarter, keeping the Lady Tigers alive in the game. On the Lady Bulldogs, we saw Sophie Adkins put in 17 points and Jada Patton score 16 in the 2nd half to run away with the victory in a nail-biter.
Sophie Adkins and Jada Patton of the Lady Bulldogs combined for 52 points, both scoring 26 points. Kylie Kinner matched that with 39 points of her own, and her teammate McKinley Ramey put up 12 points for the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Bulldogs will go against the Pikeville Lady Panthers this Thursday, March 6t at 6:30 p.m. at Pike Central High School.
Lady Panthers take down Shelby Valley for 59th District win
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Pikeville Lady Panthers defeated the Shelby Valley Lady Cats 76-48 in the 59th District Girls’ Championship game Wednesday.
The Lady Panthers came into Wednesday’s game with a record of 15-8 in the region. The Ladycats came in with a record of 6-13. The game was the third time the two teams met this season. The Lady Panthers caputered wins in both games.
The first half of the game was a back-and-forth battle between both teams; we saw standout freshman Lindsay Baldwin on the Lady Cats put up 14 first-half points, going 4 for 4 from beyond the arc. Baldwin also ended the first half with a half-court buzzer-beater shot. On the Lady Panthers, we saw Nicole Lin put up 12 points in the first half, making some big-time plays. Coming out of halftime, the score was 39-33, but in the end, the Lady Panthers ran away and won.
Lady Cats Kylie Alvin ended the game with 20 points, Nicole Lin had 15 points, and the M.V.P. of the district tournament, Leighan Jackson, finished the night with 16 points. The Shelby Valley had Lindsay Baldwin end the game with 23 points, and behind her was Miley Riddle with 9 points.
Both teams will find out who they will go against this Friday, February 28, for the regional title.
