Pike man charged with sodomy of child
PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man has been charged with a sex crime against a child. Justin Damron, 34, of Mouthcard, was indicted on a charge of first-degree sodomy back on Feb. 26. According to the indictment, he is accused of subjecting a child younger than 12 to deviate sexual contact from July to December of 2024. The charge is a felony, punishable by 20-to-50 years or life in prison. Damron was arrested March 3 in Pendleton County and not returned to Pike County until Tuesday. Woman’s body found near abandoned vehicle
GRUNDY, Va. — Police are investigating after a woman’s body was found in a remote area of Buchanan County on Sunday. Buchanan County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a vehicle abandoned on an ATV trail, about two miles off of Old Wolf Road, at Looney’s Creek. They found a pickup truck that appeared to have become stuck in mud. Nobody was in or near the vehicle, but deputies did find a small dog which appeared to have been without food for an extended time. New trial date set in 2019 murder case
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A Floyd County man’s repeatedly delayed murder trial has a new trial date. Wesley Glenn Martin, 50, of Wayland, was arrested on a charge of murder in February 2019, after the body of 26-year-old Jordan Tackett was found buried in a shallow grave in his yard. On Monday, Floyd Circuit Judge Johnny Ray Harris set the case for trial May 18. A bond hearing is also scheduled to be held over Zoom next week. Martin is currently being held in the Pike County Detention Center.

Two sides differ on punishment for former guard who revealed ‘unofficial policy’ of abuse
LONDON, Ky. — Sentencing for former guard who revealed an “unofficial policy” of prisoner assault at the Martin County federal prison will take place next week, with the prosecution and defense differing widely on what his sentence should be. Terry Melvin, 60, who worked as a lieutenant at U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy, pleaded guilty in January 2025 to conspiracy against rights and deprivation of civil rights. In his plea agreement, Melvin revealed a conspiracy with at least 17 other prison employees to assault prisoners requesting protective custody in order to reduce the population of the special housing unit. Tug Valley wins third state championship in a row
The Tug Valley Panthers just won their third consecutive boys’ basketball Class A championship after defeating the number one seed Great Beckley Christian 64-54. The Panthers are just the seventh team in West Virginia boys’ basketball history to win three state championships in a row, joining an impressive list of programs. This also makes this their sixth championship in school history. Tug Valley started the game off slow, going down as much as eight points in the first quarter but quickly got it going behind a 30-point performance by senior Braydun Harris, earning him the MVP of the tournament.
